Antico Color Scheme
June 18, 2024The following colors were selected as part of a software development project at university.
However, we ended up using a modified color palette, so I decided to publish the colors here.
This color palette is licensed under the MIT license.
Why
Close your eyes. Think of a medieval time period, or the way old books look. Picture the illustrations drawn in these books. See those vivid colors, those deep blues and the red capital letters.
Now go online and try to find a medieval color palette, that is freely available.
This is where Antico comes in.
Antico is a handpicked, gotic/antique color palette with many color variants.
Process
When looking for medieval-style fonts, I came across GoticoAntiqua:
In parallel to historical research, Rafael Ribas & Alexis Faudot, researchers at ANRT, produced fifteen fonts and one set of initial letters.
A true gold mine, if you ask me. Inspired by these fonts, I created a sepia-style color palette, by referencing fantasy-style paintings of medieval landscapes.
Antico was created in a similar fashion, this time, I went through the videos on the GoticoAntiqua website, and screenshotted all the parts where they showed writing and illustrations. Then I went through and hand-picked matching colors from these pictures.
You can find these colors below.
