Hear me out: Coasy

March 9, 2026

You know when you make the same mistake every time?
Well, sometimes it is not you who is wrong, but the system. So instead of admitting defeat and moving on, you could try to change it.

Today, I want to show you why it should be coasy instead of cozy or cosy.

Let’s start by looking at the dictionary definition:

Affording comfort and warmth; snug; social and comfortable 1

Comfort

First of all, I’m going to address the elephant in the room: the current US spelling.

cozy (/ˈkoʊzi/)

Honestly, the z doesn’t look like comfort at all. In my opinion, z is just a sharp letter in general, probably because of its pronunciation and the sharp corners the letter is made of.
In contrast, the s used in the British spelling looks a lot more comfortable. Almost like it is welcoming you, inviting you to snuggle up against it - which you could to, without being hurt by sharp corners like you would on the z.

Warmth

Looking at the British spelling, I think you can be a lot more at ease. However, in a way the word still looks cold.

cosy (/ˈkoʊzi/)

You know what isn’t cold?
A coat2. Well, arguably it can be cold, but it is meant to keep you warm.
And frankly I think we should also adopt the a: coasy.

Pronunciation

You might be wondering if this change would have a significant impact on the pronunciation.
I’m not an expert, but I think it doesn’t need to have.

According to Wiktionary, the current UK pronunciation is /ˈkəʊzi/ (see above).
If we look up the əʊ sound on Wikipedia, it is listed as being similar to roll, cold, go, hope but also goat3.

We can also take a look at a word that is spelled very similar to coasy: coast (kəʊst)4.
As you can see, it has a very similar pronunciation, but with s instead of z. Just picture yourself wearing your comfy coat, walking along the coast, looking out on the water, sipping tea from a flask.

So, I hereby put forward coasy pronounced /ˈkəʊsi/ (or /ˈkəʊzi/) if you are less coasy).
You can listen to the words being pronounced here: /ˈkəʊsi/ and /ˈkəʊzi/.

Conclusion

In my opinion, and hopefully yours too (now), coasy is just the better combination of comfortable, warm, and snug.

And whilst it probably won’t ever make its way into a dictionary, that doesn’t mean that I will start correcting it.

coasy (/ˈkəʊsi/, /ˈkəʊzi/)
Bringing comfort and warmth; snug; comfortable
